I have been on the faculty at ASU since 2004, tenured in 2010. I believe in creating challenging learning experiences for my students that prepares them for industry, the profession, and life. I do this through hands-on, project-based teaching in the Software Enterprise.
I was one of the founding members of the program faculty of Software Engineering at ASU, the nation's first ABET-accredited software engineering program offered in an online modality. I have developed dozens of courses and am primarily responsible for the curricular design of both the Bachelor's and Master's programs in software engineering. I have administered the programs in the past for several years, and also have been heavily involved in ABET activities and in re-defining our eveluation processes as we have successfully earned accreditation the past 2 cycles.
I conduct use-inspired applied research, and apply industry best practices in the classroom. My primary area is "Software Engineering", but my interests vary from enterprise computing to edTech to Agile/Lean and open source software engineering. Currently I am most active in the areas of Agile/Lean Software Engineering, and Open Source Software, Software Engineering for education and healthcare, and Software Engineering Education. Active research projects are described on my research page. I welcome motivated graduate students to come by and speak with me about ways to get involved.
Academics always refer to their duties as "Teaching, Research, and Service", and so you will find the customary navigation titles to your left. But that is never how I view my activities. Rather, I try to always be Innovating and Learning, whether doing so in the context of research, teaching, entrepreneuring, consulting, (walking, talking, breathing...). And I greatly enjoy doing these with others; in fact I find it a necessary component of reaching my goals for these activities.
